If you thought this was clickbait, you’re wrong. Not only did an NBA player truly own Barack Obama toilet paper, but there’s a photo.
The player, Seattle-native Spencer Hawes, is a conservative who spent years in ultra-liberal NBA locker rooms. While never a star player, Hawes’ skills were ahead of his time. He was a 7’1″ center who spent a decade nailing three-pointers, most notably for the Sacramento Kings and Philadelphia 76ers.
Although he retired in 2017, a bit before the left went full-Marxist, it’s still head-scratching that he was well-liked by his teammates, even after his special toilet paper became known. If a white NBA player was caught with something like that today, Commissioner Adam Silver would skip suspending him and immediately lobby for the death penalty.
Back to toilet-paper-gate.
Knowing the business he was in, Hawes did not want the Obama-mocking wipes to see the light of day.
It was Philadelphia 76er teammate, Evan Turner, who used his restroom upon visiting Spencer’s home and saw the paper.
Did Turner calmly and privately take his right-wing teammate aside and discuss this insensitive display?
Nope. While still IN HIS BATHROOM, his teammate snapped a picture and promptly blasted it on Instagram. What a friend!
But again, this incident happened in 2014. That was a different time. The NBA players, media, and coaches generally understood that this was just a young man having fun. Thankfully, it did not stain Spencer Hawes’ career. We cannot say the same for the toilet paper.
However, things got awkward when Hawes won the championship and, while visiting the White House, asked Barack to autograph the toilet paper. Okay, fine. We made that part up.
