On Tuesday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, the Charlotte Hornets released thousands of hornets into the arena during the player introductions.
The decision to release the insects was inspired by a long and successful history of sports teams showcasing their actual mascot for their fans. “The University of Colorado lets an actual buffalo run around their stadium before the game. Auburn lets an eagle sore around, too—and the fans just love it,” said Hornet game operations manager Clark Jenkins. “We knew there was a risk of the hornets immediately attacking our fans and players, but there’s also a risk of not being innovative and thinking outside the box”.
More cynical fans believe the blinding physical pain cause by the vicious hornets was to serve as a distraction from the emotional pain the basketball team routinely inflicts on the city. “It wasn’t that crazy of a strategy honestly,” said season ticket holder Jack Baker. “During those minutes of slapping away the hornets and screaming for my life, I completely forgot we drafted Adam Morrison”.
Hundreds of fans were taken to the hospital and the Hornets lost to Dallas 111-90, making this one of the worst nights for Charlotte fans since the All-Star break.
